Is it regular - e.g. once every crank or wheel rotation? Or does it happen at random?

it sounds quite regular yes. It doesn't happen all the time though, it comes and goes with no obvious trigger

kink or tight link in chain ???????

or check pedals/ cranks and bb lock ring......... if loose, tighten

Could be a tight link actually, I'll check that in the morning. My pedals are brand new and the problem predates them, but I'll check the BB again just to be sure. Thanks!

Did you figure it out, Wardy? I have the same issue. It seems to happen when I have a litte momentum and I'm pedaling with little resistance.

I didn't actually, I was still working on thtat when I broke a few spokes. I finished building the hub onto a new rim yesterday, so I'll see if it happens again. Thinking back it is possible I was being inaccurate with my friction shifters, but that's scraping the barrel.
Hey guys, I've noticed a very irritating knocking sound whilst pedaling on my tourer. I'm quite sure it isn't the BB, so unless it is an odd form of chain noise, I am assuming the rear mech is the issue. Anybody know anything about that? I like my bikes to be silent :(
