I've only been here 10years, so I'm not sure what it was like before. I presume the 'Northern Quarter' moniker came about after the Arndale bomb and they regenerated that whole northern side of the city centre.
There does seem to be a trend for giving every single area of town a name though. There's even a Southern Quarter now.
Anyway...
