Shame you're after drops, I've got a barely used 'modern' high quality part carbon/aluminium hybrid which certainly isn't clunky nor ugly (IMO). Comes fully kitted out with mudguards/rack/lights/computer/decent pump etc and in his size.
Takes wide tyres and has 42mm fitted.
Carbon stays/wishbones, all Carbon bars/forks & seatpost plus 27 speed Deore running gear, the wheels are double walled Specialized on Deore hubs. V-brakes however but very very good stoppers.
PM me with an email for details if interested -

For this kind of bike keep an eye on YACF, or retrobike or the CTC forums. They come up more often than here, not that I'm trying to publicise other forums.
Wait, I actually am.
Well go there to buy the bike but don't post any more than you absolutely have to.
Looking for a bike for a friend who wants to start riding again after a very long haitus.
As this is his first bike for a long time, to prevent him buying a cheap new hybrid from Evans, I've suggested he looks at the second hand market. I know he wants something with drops, but doesn't want something too aggressive, but something he can tootle about on should he want, and clearances and brazeons so he can fit full mudguards, and perhaps a rack, and perhaps even slightly chunky tyres for off road use - but still fairly 'cool' looking, whatever that means, so a clunky modern hybrid/tourer would probably be undesirable.
He also has an odd fascination with disc brakes, so their presence would be a bonus.
Guy has cash to spend and is very keen so this is not a speculative post - this be serious.
Not sure what size is suitable for someone of his height - he's quite a lanky chap so thinking 60/62cm?
Edit: should have mentioned my friend is budgeting around the £500-600 mark although could spend more for the right bike.
