  • Ha, I've literally just stopped for a break under a tree watching some brave souls doing a tri at Dorney lake, I'm at mile 13, I am cheating a bit as I have ice packs around my water in my camelbak keeping it cool!

    Good news on the pb, maybe next time try not drinking at all, it might help with the second half of the race ;)

  • Just under 5k in pretty much exactly 20 minutes this morning.

    the sun burn on my shoulders from yesterday has nearly calmed down - that'll teach me to be a slevless

  • I'm finding running a bit miserable this summer... Every time grass touches my legs (which is most of the time on most of my runs) my legs (and any exposed part of me that happens to touch any foliage) come out in furiously itchy red welts as if I'd been running through a nettle patch. Sure I may run across the odd nettle but those usually sting instantly and then fade, whereas the itchy-ness I'm experiencing doesn't really kick in until I stop running but takes a couple of hours to fade.

    I'm wondering if it's related to hay fever, but I only get that very mildly with some slight sniffles.

    Anyone else get anything similar? Bit frustrating!!

  • I get rashes on my upper body if my hayfever is extra bad. Itching makes it much much worse as well. Sounds similar. Put some soothing cream on after shower?

  • Just signed up for my first half marathon on Sept 8th. Bit daunted but sure I'll survive. First 15k today in 1hr 30mins which is far from fast but it's my longest run to date afaik so not a bad start.
    Would have got a bit further but the arch in my shoes appears to be too high and gives epic blisters beyond 7k. Need to chuck em and wear my 5:10 freerunners instead which don't seem to rub.

  • Well, you're three quarters of the way there in terms of distance. If that felt ok (apart from the blisters) you'll find the distance no trouble. Running it as fast as you'd like is the hard bit!

  • I have no targets at all as regards to my time. First time round I just want to finish without puking/passing out.
    Done some stretches and feel hunky dorey. Will try and do 10-15k 3 times a week consistantly for the next few weeks and see how I go from there.
    Presumably I should attempt to do the whole distance prior to the event?

  • Read somewhere that if you're able to do the full distance in a week, but spread over several occasions, you'd be fine. So 3 10k's should do it.

  • Hmm, interesting. Will aim for that but try a little longer each week on my weekend run if I've got time. Would be nice to know I can definitely do it before the day..

  • I'd pick a target time, just to give yourself a focus, and if you're running 15k already you've got a great base to work from.

    I think from memory Hal Higdon has a good training plan for a half, depending on your time commitments..

    Follow that and I would have thought 2 hours would be within reach, possibly even faster!

  • Well under 2hrs if that 15k felt OK, you can just HTFU for the last mile or two if you struggle.

  • My fiancĂ©e has the Higdon app which she's using to train herself up for the event so maybe I'll go for that as well.
    Hopefully wearing better fitting shoes or just compeed it up and I'll manage the distance within a few weeks, then start chipping away at my time. It certainly feels doable at least..

  • I've found a spot of vaseline is a good preventative for the odd blister. Maybe not epic ones tho'.

    If you're running 15k two months before a half you shouldn't have any problems at all. Plenty of time to work on speed and endurance.

    Which race is it? I'm doing Ealing again at the end of Sept. Ran 1:43 last year despite my right calf giving me grief over the second half so hoping for comfortably under 1:40 this time round.

  • Morning, I used to suffer both, then went to see a nutritionist. I had some gaps (mainly green foods) in my diet. I added in loads of green vegetable and over (or what seemed like) a short period of time my hayfever and any skin blotching went, and has stayed away for 2 years. Keep a food diary for a week and see if you can add anything to it.

  • Also, ran a PB at the Landaid Charity 10km in Regents Park in June, 35.05, however, im not sure it is 10km, felt a bit short. Will run with my Garmin next time. Next running race is the JLL 5km run in Regents Park, anyone else doing it (It is related to the property industry)?

  • ffs, Jaymz, if you run a PB, you complain that the course was long, not short! Any fule no dat.

    Done c.4hrs of running and an hour of kickball in the last 2 days. Back doesn't like it, but not wasting this glorious weather and feels good to be running again, however slowly.

    Is that supposed to be exclusive to the property industry? Can't see anything that says so, but then 'company name' is a mandatory field on the entry form.

  • Supposed to be, but I work for a law firm, we have a property department. Not sure how they would know or if they would bother checking. Think (some of the) entry fee goes to charity, so get yourself in. THE COURSE MAY ALSO BE A BIT SHORT (If I PB Ill say its long, just for KL).

    Running in the five finger shoes presents a different problem; it becomes very important to keep your toenails well trimmed, particularly on the big toe.

    Really, any runner - particularly in the current heat - should be eating their 5 a day and then another 5 or so. It helps combat fatigue and the dreaded runner's trots. Protein bars and gels do not contribute to a balanced diet.

    Mileage wise, each week, i'm not too far off the first weeks, so instead of doing a long saturday run, i'll chuck a few shorter ones in in the week, and build milage that way.

    However, my schedule can't follow his exactly. I can really only swim on tuesdays, so my plan is

    Monday - rest day
    Tuesday - swim
    Wednesday - short run
    Thursday - short run
    Friday - rest day
    Saturday - long run
    Sunday - rest day / short slow run if I have the legs for it

    So slight re-jigging of his schedule, and probably one less short run per week.

    Still feasible? My training now is 1k swimming on tuesdays, 5-7k run on thursdays or a 25k ride, and then 10-14k run on saturdays. So cutting back on saturdays, adding more in the week.

    Too steep a curve? Really don't want to blow my knees up half way. And if I can do it 8 weeks instead that'd be good too...

  • Looks fine, I'd say a swim probably outweighs a short running session as it should build core and improve your breathing.

  • Did another 14k yesterday after work yesterday. Felt pretty good and not suffered today at all.
    Rest til sunday and see what I'm capable of then.
