You can leave the stays off the new ones if you don't like them, and the new Q/R version comes with an adapter to fit to the saddlebag to.
In addition it is possible now to attach a light to the new one using the stay bolt, whether you use the stay or not. Much improved in my opinion.
Failing all that though I have an old Q\R type I might part with. How much are you willing to pay to convince me I need to sell it?
