Fit the SS freewheel. Move axle spacers from drive to non-drive side to fix the chainline. Re-dish the wheel to re-centre the rim.

Thanks , that makes sense, any idea roughly how much it it costs to get a wheel re dished? Trying to weigh up cost compared to buying a cheap flip flop wheel, then I'd have the option to try fixed as well !

Not too hard to try yourself. Read Sheldon Brown on wheelbuilding for the theory. You can re-dish it in your frame, quite a therapeutic Zen job once you get into it. Tools are cheap too since you only need a spoke key.

Thanks I may give it a go this weekend then Ill post the results !
Hi
Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere I'm having trouble finding a cleat explanation.
I have a nice set of wheels which run a threaded 5 speed block (freewheel) on the back . I'd like to convert it to singlespeed by using a screw on bmx freewheel or similar. Normally a conversion kit for a cassette freehub would come with spacers to get the sprocket in the correct position for a good chain line.
So what do I use as spacers on a threaded freewheel hub? Are there threaded spacers available? surely the box freewheel is much narrower than the 5 speed block so what takes up the rest of the thread? Also will I still need to re-dish the wheel or can I avoid this? I'm trying to do this as cheap as possible without buying a new wheel.
can someone please explain this to me ?
Cheers
