I think the most interesting part is that a lot of people now have a good camera at hand all the time, so there's no excuse for not taking photos. Hopefully this will bring both interesting perspectives such as Wiganwills link, and also new photographers who otherwise wouldn't have turned to photography.
Also the ubiquity of it. Not that I know much about war, but maybe that magnum photographer is seen more as a normal guy with his phone, rather than a docu photographer.
I also like the fact that you now can take great photos with your phone. If you got a good eye for it, you can create stunning stuff - http://instagram.com/johanrenck for example. A few years ago there weren't even any point trying.
