  • Brilliant stuff. I think within a few years shooting with camera phones will be the norm.

I don't understand the emphasis on the phone part of cameraphone in many of these online discussions. Often when cameraphone photography is discussed it is with regard to it being democratic: with cameras attached to phones more people are photographing, etc etc.

In this case, if someone is a professional photographer (defined as so by being a part of an agency such as Magnum) what is the significance of the phone? Are we simply impressed by the photographs achieved by a small sensor and limited manual controls? In which case, with sensor size increasing in compacts (APSC in Ricoh GR) should reverse the trend for cameraphone photography.

Or is the professional cameraphone discussion really hinting that a new type of documentarian is emerging: the undercover-vigilante(?). Has the size of professional cameras, most notably in the DSLR era, limited their opportunities for true reportage?

I'm quite interested in why this is a topic of discussion.
