I'm confused! One moment you have DA shifter in the post, then you're taking about Sram and then Athena? General rule is you need to match the rear mech, cassette and rear shifter to make it work without work arounds if your using STI.
Anyway, I can't see why you couldn't make Athena work with a single 3/32 chainring. To make 11speed chains the width of the chain is narrower but the space between the plates is the same as a 9 or 10 speed chain.
