  • Yeh -you're not wrong. But trying to get the tension right on a new chain- maybe not perfect amount of play -and then chain stretches a bit and as your on the roads and not a smooth track and bingo off comes the chain - followed by you. Track or horizontal road drop outs are easy -verticals are not - a tensioner does work well , isn't heavy and you are making use of the hole left by the rear mech.
