The thing is, he's not going to be using the same tyre size... Or to be more specific, the frame is made to work down to 700c x 18mm tyres. If he goes 26 x 1.1 he'll lose less than 30mm, but chances are he'll go for at least 1.35... I think most polo players are more like 1.5 - 2, which would almost put him at the same point as 21mm 700 tyres, right?
All this is pointless, IMHO, as everyone's freewheel there's no reason for pedal strike. Just keep the turning side pedal away from the bottom of the stroke.
