Also, Steam is having a Paradox sale. Lots of heavy duty strategy fare there that I don't have any experience with yet. But let me sing Crusader Kings II praises.
CKII is unlike any strategy game I've ever played. For one thing, there is no endgame, no victory condition. There is nothing in it you have to do. It's not deep warfare or balancing military units and technology, even though all of that is there.
What it is, is the most machiavellian social RPG/strategy game ever made. I have nurtured dynasties through the ages. I have gone from a brilliant diplomat and military strategist as my head, who suddenly takes ill, people think he's possessed and he dies in his bed. The dynasty then inherited by his slow-witted, clubfooted, incestous freak of a cousin. I have had Ireland take over most of Europe and I've had empires wiped out due to family members scheming.
It's pretty much Game of Thrones, with even more incest and treachery. There are even Game of Thrones mods that change the kingdoms and maps to the books. The basic game lets you play anyone from a lowly baron in some backwater to the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. DLCs added the ability to play Muslim empires or even traders and republics. The newest DLC rolls back the starting date to the 800s and you get to play pagans, Vikings and all sorts of bloodthirsty folk that don't need to hew to the feudal rules.
It's on sale now. It goes on sale a couple times a year on Steam and on various other sites such as Gamers Gate and Green Man Gaming or Amazon. But I really recommend it. I'm playing it now and it was probably tied for my personal game of the year in 2012.
