For Sale: 9 speed Campag rear mech

Posted on
  • This is a 9 speed Campag rear mech from the late 90s. As far as I understand, Campag had a phase of not labelling Chorus or Record, so I don't know which it is, and I can't find a serial number anywhere. It's from a bike that had a mixture of Chorus and Record, so I really don't know which it is. Obviously it's old, but it's not been used for ages, and it still works nicely.

As per my previous old components, this is being sold for St. Anna's children's home in Ghana. www.stannas.org There is now a Virgin Money link, so if you pay through that, then I'll post it.

It's £15 but I'm open to offers, as it's quite tricky to value these old bits.

I will be in London all weekend, so I'm happy to bring it with me if convenience can triumph over postage. Any questions, please ask.

Not a hundred percent but I think the mech is an eight speed model the body on a nine speed is sort of rounded?

  • I think I ran it on a 9 speed, but I can't remember.

  • if it's a 9 speed for sure, i would be interested.

  • The rear mech on the ebay link is listed as 8 speed, but is different from this one. Mine may well be 8 speed. Does anyone know how to check? I've not ridden Campag for years.

  • I'll stop the thread whilst I do some Campag forensics. Sorry to waste people's time. Feel free to PM me anyway.

  • Probably 8 speed. I took it to a bike shop for assessment etc, and the bloke in the shop bought it from me. Thanks for looking and asking the questions though.

  • Very much looks eight speed to me, retro bike has a very extensive archive of Campagnolo catalogues here which should help you pin it down to an exact year

For your future reference, Campag started labelling components with groupset names from 1995, so this is from 1994 or earlier.

9 speed was introduced in 1997, but not completely phased-out until 2000.

Ribbed cable adjusters are from the 1st generation C-Record era: 1991 or earlier. 2nd gen., until 1994, had a "guitar tuner" style adjuster.

Having the stop adjuster screws below the body and an open, upper jockey wheel cage were a feature of later, 1st gen. Record, Croce D'Aune and Chorus models, so 1990 or 1991.

  • Yup, looks like 8sp to me...
