I live on Chatsworth Road and A&S have helped me out a couple of times (including popping a frame in a vice to get a stuck BB out). Sadly I work full time (on the other side of town) as well. Is there anything else that locals can do to help?

I was wondering what had been going on, I had noticed they've been closed a lot during the day and so on.
Also a slave to the man but would be willing to help in other ways if possible.

Good thread. I don't know him but my previous employers at the Optician's close by mentioned he was really ill and that it was out of no where too. Hope he gets better if possible.

It's mere minutes from where I live, I'd be happy to help where I could. Same as most above, slave to the man during the day, but evenings and some weekends are doable.

Cool, lots of locals here then! I'm not sure what else can be done. Hopefully someone looking for work will pick this up, so spread the word. Its probably quite a good opportunity to get some bike shop management experience too as the owner is likely to be ill for some time and might well want someone to take over.

I presume they would need people with bike shop experience?

The owner of the bike shop has sadly passed away. It looks as though his widow will try and take it on. It's quite moving when the family see it as their responsibility to keep a business alive, I hope everything works out. More info here: https://www.facebook.com/CRTRA

Dear all.
As Euan informed,
Solly my dear husband sadly passed away after a long illness. We would like to thank the locals, freinds and customers for all the generous help and support during this difficult period.
We are a dedicated local bike shop offering good service, high standards of workmanship and fair pricing.
We look forward to continuing serving the local community as we always have done.
We are open 5 days soon to be 6 days again. The shop has been given a new look in 'memory of solly'
.
Hope to see you all soon.
Sham and the team. :) -

I'm actually moving away from the area next week (sadly - although hopefully temporarily) - I was going to pop by and see if you had any old bike boxes you didn't want?

I was very sorry to hear the news, Sham. Condolences. I met Solly a couple of times over the years, although I doubt he would have remembered me. He was always wonderfully friendly, and I never heard a bad word spoken about him (and, for a bike shop owner, that's saying something). Lots of good words, too. It's great that you have the shop up and running again.
(I missed this thread completely at the time, Euan.)

Hi Oliver,
Thank you for your kind words, Solly will truely be missed and has left a huge void not just for my family but also the community. He really was a most happy, kind and generous person.Solly was very good at remembering almost anyone who came by the shop!
Best,

had a free wheel and chain replaced at a&s last week. Great value, genuinely friendly service, unpretentious. cyclists in e5 and e9 are lucky to have it.

I will be sure to visit A&S when I'm in the area. And buy something!
Hi all,
The owner of my local bike shop, A&S Cycles (http://www.aandscycles.com/) on Chatsworth Road (E5) is really ill and his wife has been struggling to keep the business going. They are quite desperate for help and are looking to employ people to help run the shop 2-4 days a week. They are a small local business that have been really active in wider community and I really want to help them out, unfortunately i'm tied to a full time job.
If anyone is keen give them a call or pop round, and let them know that Euan (me) from the CRTRA (traders and residents association) put you on to them.
Cheers
