We should also remember that a rider who starts a 100 knowing that he's going to be on his bike for up to five hours has almost certainly got to be prepared to suffer more (or at least for longer) than the man who is expecting to finish in 3 hours 40 minutes.
I love this camaraderie in endurance, and especially in ultra endurance sport. Sure the guys at the sharp end are inspiring but it's ordinary folks who are just out to test themselves and have to struggle on for hours longer just to make the cut-off who really impress me.
