tired without success to get my dog out far enough to come with me (no forcing, just coaxing)
I like this typo.

I wear two hats open water. one silicon, one latex.
Yes the breathing thing is normal.... you arent used to the cold water, especially on your face.
I used to try and duck under the water a few times before swimming off, try and remember big long strokes and big long breaths, nice a steady...until you get your breathing sorted... Or do breast stroke until your face is used to it.
I think you do get used to it, but i always used to get this feeling with anything under 18c....
(so all the time) :) -

2 hats for me too.
Did 2x1,500m yesterday plus warm up, warm down and some kicking drills. I religiously track all my running and cycling workouts/times/splits but I've never been organised enough to track swimming. Still I think I did them in 23:30 and 24:40ish, although I've no idea how that compares to anything I used to do at all.

does anyone else find it difficult to breathe for the first couple of minutes?!

It's normal for this to happen. Not for us lizard people though.
I've said too much.

910XT. Job done. -

^ I know. I'm saving/selling stuff at the moment but I'm a bit torn between a couple of options.
Powermeter + Osynce Navi2 + Garmin Swim + 310xt for running (already own).
Powermeter + 910XT.I'm 99% settled on the latter option, but I'm wondering wether the 910 will be a jack of all trades but master of none. i.e. I believe that the Osynce will handle the power data better than the 910, but I don't know how much worst the 910 will be.
Considering only pool swimming, does anyone have any idea how the 910 and "swim" compare? pros/cons etc.?
-
• #1658
910 is a bit shit for open water - but that's because GPS is crap in water.
It is pretty good in a pool, although, annoyingly, lacks any ability to programme intervals or alarms. I have no other comparison, however.
On the bike, I have binned my 705 (as I never use the maps) and it picks up ANT+ powermeters with no problems.
For slevless racing, you can't rally beat it though.

Finally managed to get myself to bray lake to go for an outdoor swim, did four laps of 400m (there's a 750 and 1200 loop as well) was lovely!
Only complaint was that my googles were rubbish, the steamed up, let water in and I couldn't see anything when swimming towards the sun...
Any recommendations?
-
• #1660
Not very helpful but those are common problems that are difficult to overcome. Some people like tinted/mirrored goggles for swimming into the sun but if the sun is in your face it's always going to be hard to see, no matter what.
The goggles steaming up issue has been getting al lot of coverage on a my tri club's forum recently with no very good resolution either. Fogging is going to be worst when there is a high temperature differential between the warm air in your goggles and the cold water outside. I find spit works adequately and last thing before the start I rinse the inside with water. Others are recommending anti fog solution but the received wisdom seems to be that the stuff divers use is stronger and more effective than the stuff designed for pools.

Tried the spit thing on my swim "mask" and looked up how to put it on properly, the combination resulted in not having to take the goggles off at all for sunday mornings swim and although there is an element of the weather conditions were different (no sun and colder) hopefully this is progress...

rub the inside of the goggles with a piece of a potato. Wipe off gently while moist, (!) leave to dry.
Et Voila, mist free goggles! -

Another shout out for Shepperton Lake for swimmin'. Was again beautiful there on Saturday morning. Getting busier though. About 350 people had passed through that morning compared to half that two weekends prior. Still not close to what you could call 'busy'. Apparently evening are awesome - no one there.

Hi swimmers. sorry I've been away. I've been busy eating mostly. Finally oh god finally got back in the water recently with a brief a chilly dip in the med in Barcelona. Followed that with a quick pool session last week and broke out the wetsuit at a near-deserted Brockwell Lido tonight. Shamed to say the days of 5k plus training sessions are a thing of distant memory. I'm right back to plodding distance plodder mode again. 1500m tonight. That used to be our warm up! Heh. Feels good to get back in the water though.

In other news, I can confirm that triathletes are weird... When I arrived this evening there was some guy training in a tri-suit in the pool. By the time I got to the changing room he was there too, and instead of showering he put on a pair of leather loafers and a mac and wandered out into the rain.
And in final news I can confirm that I fucking love swimming :-)
This just reminded me that last night when I was changing a guy got out of Brockwell Lido, in a pair of what looked like running shorts, soaking wet, not even air dried, no towel - he pulled on a pair of running shoes, a thick woolen jumper and ran out of the building with his goggles still on his forehead.
Awesome.

Shout out to Ellerton Park mandem holding it down in North Yorkshire.
Lovely lake, clearish waters, good mix of activities going on.
So bored of 4km swims in the pool, i get out feeling piss drunk and my skin is like leather, god knows how much piss and sweat i've digested since being in there.
the lake is lovely, much better option and much more realistic.

2.4k non stop in an empty bray lake this morning!
Took 49 minutes which is way faster than I expected, I feel like I can nearly swim now, as most of the time I managed to string together breathing, my arms and legs, although it still requires quite a lot of concentration!

Wetsuit advice please.
My wetsuit got nicked at Helvellyn tri last year and I need to get another (quite urgently as the Henley Classic is on the 30th June). Where can I view and try on a decent range of wetsuits? I have a slight preference for HUUB or BlueSeventy but I'm not umbilically tied to either brand.
Preferably as close to Oxford as possible but if I need to travel a bit to avoid having to swim in a shit wetsuit then I will.

I bought at Sigma Sport in Kingston - not exactly in your area, but probably as large a range as you will get anywhere, and very helpful staff. I got the Blue Seventy Helix - a bit higher range than I wanted to go for, but felt worth it, it's an awesome fit, and I felt comfortable parting with the money after trying so many and getting sound guidance form them.
Did my first long swim of the year in it yesterday - 4.5 hours in a lake in Brum. The plan was to get out for a couple of hours and get back in again, but it was a vile day, strong wind and driving rain, so I shat it and stayed out. Still, good to have a long swim under the belt at least.

No idea about wetsuit shopping I'm afraid. knightlancer, you're nuts man.
Back to Brockwell for me on Friday. Was too warm for wetsuit really but I need to get used to swimming in it. Was a sunny evening so busy, choppy and not as zen as last time.
Where's a good open water spot within post work cycle of South East London?

I got the Blue Seventy Helix
Tried one of these on... very lovely. Maybe even fractionally nicer than the Archimedes 4:4 that I went for, but I've a mate who got me a good deal on the HUUB. Hopefully it will be here for the Henley Classic. Anyone else doing it?

^ I panic breathe for the first couple of minutes till i warm up. But it think this was simply down to too thin a hat. Bought a thicker one, all hunky dory now. Water down my back keeps flushing out though - chilly..
