Stolen bikes

  • My girlfriend just accidentally apprehended two probable bike thieves and one of them dumped half a bike outside my house... Not sure what to do - bring it in or leave it there? She called police but was really vague and they don't have the exact address to come and get it...

  • What frame is it? Pick it up before some pikey takes it for scrap. At least it may give someone a chance of getting part of their bike back?

  • Caught a guy in the act of nicking a saddle on Broadway market a few days ago. He was yanking a brooks out of a girls frame. Stopped as I was cycling past and started asking what he was doing. He was "locking his bike up" apparently, then started to try and lock his bike to the girls saddle through the saddle rails...

Called him on it and told him to do one.

Any saddle around those parts not properly secured, it's only a matter of time i'm afraid.

  • I went to Sclater street on Sun as it goes. Didn't find the saddle in question but the number of Brooks/leather saddles for sale was quite eye-opening. Frankly I was left feeling it's hard to believe most of these were obtained honestly given how cheap most of them seem to be.

  • No chance, they're all nicked.

  • PS hard luck on losing your Ideale. Have a look at Universal Cycle Centre's list of Ideales and the prices of them to see just how hard. Hope you get it back.

Cheers. It was a long shot but happened to fairly close-by on Sunday so had nothing to lose in looking.

  • came across this whilst searching for my stolen Condor Italia, bit odd same seller has 3 bikes lying around that he doesn't use enough:

    anyone missing those?

  • Tried to report the items - "Reports of stolen property on eBay need to come from a law enforcement official. If you are a law enforcement official and wish to submit a report, please visit our Safety Centre for more information."

Read: We make money off fencing bikes so go away

  • Can we buy them, and steal them back for the rightful owner once we know the address?

  • I saw some dodgy little git this morning riding around Chiswick on a Cannondale CAAD 3 setup for someone disabled. One handlbar, Cinelli alter stem with second control on it.

  • Hey a mate had a bike stolen a couple of days ago , wasn't locked up and he doesn't know when it happened , I guess there's very little chance of it making it back to him ?

  • Shame their damn nice saddles

  • Does he know what colour it was?

  • On the subject of stolen bikes, has anybody been through the experience of actually seeing their bike advertised?

I have subscribed to notifications and a search the various sites for any sign of my Surly (see above) but I am wondering how long before I might expect to see signs of it, if at all.

  • I saw the wheels of my bike around 3 weeks after it went missing so keep looking.

  • Found my bike on gumtree, not the nicest feeling...I had no proof of purchase, or images so ended up buying it back.

hmmm - what can be done about this - do street market retailers have to prove that they've obtained goods via honest means?!

  • The problem is that practically, for the police, it's almost impossible to prove a saddle (or any other bike part) is stolen. The serial numbers on frames do this, but parts don't have serial numbers. So how do you prove that an Ideale saddle is your Ideale saddle, not just the same model?

Brooks should start putting serial numbers on their saddles.

Of course the other option is to customise the saddle in some way, or get Skully to do it for you.

I don't actually know if he's still doing this, btw.

  • If Skully is still doing it it may be worth getting your leather saddles stamped. Mine has my name on it (obscure surname), and a serial number on the underside iirc. Makes me feel slightly less uneasy when I'm locking up, which is almost never...

  • 2010 Charge Plug Large Charcoal.
Stolen from Balls Pond Road, London, N1 last Saturday night 08/06
All stock except newiish half-link chain (as opposed to standard link) and 2 week old specialized armadillo rear tyre (as opposed to stock Kenda on the front). Did have a Movember moustache sticker on the head tube.

Would be great to get her back (ambitious).
