Royal Mail Junk mail opt-out

Posted on
  • Been getting so much rubbish through the letter box from our Royal mail Postwoman recently. Thought we'd save some trees by opting out of this 'service' (Don't remember opting in though).

If you wish to do the same ring 01865 796 964 (local rates apply) or email optout@royalmail.com . You will then receive a form to fill in...

(This opt-out lasts for 2 years then the form needs sending again...bastards!)

    Save trees-spread the word

  • I did this a while ago and it does help.

  • Thanks. Just emailed. For more info:

  • Good to hear Hippy.
    Thanks for link dst

It's been getting worse of late. Today we got junk 6 items with not even an address. Which spurred me to action.

I spoke to the Postwoman who said she hates carrying the stuff as it weighs more than the real post some days

  • This is great - we get circa 100+ leaflets a week!

  • There's also the Mail Preference Service (and the Telephone Preference Service for nuisance callers.)

    http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

  • i got a letter with a fake address from a broadband provider (possibly)
it was a pun sort of thing, i putin sharpie "not known at this address" and popped it back in the post box.
I do the same with anything labeled "The Occupier" or similar.

    small victories.

  • A lot of those "to the occupier" are hand delivered by Royail Mail so RTS doesn't work. That's why MPS is actually useful. Now if they could just stop those real estate agents letters..

  • when I get junk mail with a free return envelope....I fill it with other junk mail (with my name/address removed) and post it.

  • ha!
i used to do that with LoveFilm, keep all the 'fre wine (only £49.99)" leaflets and when i had a spare envelope i'd send it all back to them

  • can you sort the deliveries too?
got a card through door marked 11.15 today
been here indoors the whole time.......no time to ring bell?

  • 95% of my junk mail is independently delivered pizza leaflets, maybe a good wedge every day. This wouldn't help much.

Only stuff that comes through mail is things which you asked for, catalogues or newsletters from people you have worked with or purchased things from. You can get rid of these by asking the relevant senders.

  • You should just get junk from Royal Mail on one day a week, but it may be as much as 5 or 6 items on that day.
I think the Pizza Leafletters are responsible for daily stream of it and the dreaded charity bags that never get collected.

  • And the mini cab cards. Tons of them. Why deliver these to cycling households?

    This is plain wrong.

Royal Mail themselves deliver junk mail - it says so on the items! Opt-out and they stop doing so.

The hand-delivered stuff like pizza sheets can be reduced by a NO JUNK MAIL sign and the odd threat when the they still post the shit through your mailbox and you happen to be home.

Postmen get paid extra to deliver them, only a tiny amount considering you might have to carry leaflets for 400 houses but still.

Opt outs work because the postmen don't want to carry it in the first place.

  • Yup exactly what my postie said to me

  • It's fucking bullshit if you ask me. It should be opt-IN for their shit not the other way around.

  • That's what I said to the guy on the opt out phone line... He laughed in my face .
All adverts should be opt in

too much of life is spent having people telling you about the shit they want to sell you.

  • Nice one.....as everyone else seems to think, this stuff is a complete waste of time effort, money and resources. It lands on my doormat and goes straight in the recycling bin without a second glance....

  • I put the recycling bin next to my letter box. Next stop, attach a removable one under the letter box. Just fish out the actual mail each day and then pop the box out once a week for collection.

  • This is genius

Lee Beaumont paid £10 plus VAT to set up his personal 0871 line - so to call him now costs 10p, from which he receives 7p
