Well they stop your bars from taking a flesh sample from you and risers without bar end plugs look shite.

One of the most vivid memories of my youth was watching a bmxer mate of mine taking a core sample out of his ribs and lung resulting in massive blood loss, several broken ribs a punctured lung and 3 days in intensive care...
He was just doing a little ledge trick at the park at about 2mph a few inches above the ground. Never understood why people get so hung up about not fitting them personally...

Roger that. This was my initial thought (or I've read it here before and forgotten). Seems to me that riding without any brakes or a helmet is at least as, if not over 9000 times more, dangerous though. I will continue to use bar plugs and recommend that everyone else does too!
