Stupid question.... can you get these unlocked? I'm going travelling across Europe (then back to oz) and desperately need a new handset but don't want to be locked into using O2.... when I get home I want to be able to chose my provider - though I've no bloody idea what the mobile situation in oz is like these days. Hippy?

I'm out of the loop with Oz mobile. I just get a temporary sim from Telstra whenever I go back. I know they introduced 3G or 4G or something and called it Next G. Not sure of coverage. Best bet is to speak to people local to where you're likely to be. I know Telstra for example had much better coverage outside of Mildura than the other options - useful if you hit a roo on the drive to Melbourne, for example.
Regarding unlocking, it's a popular phone so I can't see it remaining unlockable for any great length of time - everything is crackable given enough time/inclination.
According to this O2 does offer unlocking, so for maybe a tenner you can get them to unlock it before you leave..

Woolworths Mobile pre-paid. Runs on the Optus network, 5gb data, shit loads of calls (cheap Optus to Optus calls and to other providers). $29 recharge. Recharge last 45 days.
Only issue is that they don't have "nano" sim cards, which is what the iPhone 5 takes. I cut down my micro sim card to fit the iPhone 5 and it works fine.
