  • They're great fun, but they do hold me back a bit up the hills. The noise they make is great though.. They buzz along and make an ace tearing sound when I skid.

  • Does anyone ride the Roller with 28c tyres and can measure the distance between the ground and the centre of BB?

Another question: Black Deep-V or H+SON Formation Face`s as new rims? I am tall and want a stable Roller for messin around, doing wheelies, curbjumps, riding backwards but also for riding fast around the countryside. FF might be a bit overfashioned and HHSB but I dig their appearance :)

  • Which ever you prefer to be honest, they're both deep section rims, you just need to choose which one you like the look of the most.

My recommendation? The Archetype so you can run even bigger tyres as well as normal skinny.

  • I heard the Archetypes arent as stable as the mentioned ones. Dont know for sure though

  • Not as stable?! they're pretty stiff! or our Jammy wouldn't be riding them on his custom CX bicycle.

  • And it`s light, too. Will think about it. I like the looks of HHSB-high profile rims but light and stiff is pretty good as well :)

You worried about pedal strikes or...?

  • Every time i look at this picture i miss my steamroller, such a solid bike i could take anyway, i'll probably get another for the winter, similar build.

I currently have a set of 28c on my roller, bought for my tourer but I really wanted to try them out so stuck them on. Will measure it tonight and post back!

  • 28mm - 25mm = 3mm, so about 3mm higher. ish. Depending in make / model of tire.

Was going to said I told you so, but it doesn't seemed necessary anymore.

  • My ex help me buy it, its just a huge reminder, you know how i am about all that...

i'm glad i sold it, but happy to buy another for the winter

  • Tokyo Fixed Dream Machine! (considering the Steamroller was helped by your ex).

  • Any ideas on the size of this roller ?

  • Looks like 56 or 59 to me

  • Not a 59, must be a 56 then...

  • It's supposed to be a 53 cm

  • Google Surly Steamroller 53cm and it's smaller than that.

    That's a 56cm.

Yeah have been, think your right , bummer !

  • Definitely a 56. Easy to tell from head-tube with Steamrollers as they are very different between 53, 56 and 59 at around an inch between each size.

  • I am looking to grow my Surly collection - with a Cross Check. Which I want to run as a light tourer/commuter bike. The thing is I hate Cantis. I have a set of new Tiagra brakes ready to go.

a.) is it possible to run road caliper brakes on the CC frame?
b.) what are the alternatives? Mini-Vs seem to be mentioned a lot.

The reason I ask is that someone advised me against it - since the fork, a rear bridge holes are meant just for mounting guards. However there are people on the web that have drilled the holes to make them bigger. Then use Tektro long reach calipers.

  • You just answered your own questions.

  • Yeah I know I'm trying to convince myself I should to get the Cross Check. I have a whole Tiagra groupset which I put on to my old Raleigh road frame. Whoever it is having spacing / bent hanger issues. So I thought I would just buy a new frame. Looked at the CC, and Soma Double Cross. That can't take road brakes either. Any other frames I should look at. Space Horse is the other one I quite like.

  • Mini v will be plentiful, the only limitations is mudguard clearance.

    And canti isn't that hard.

  • I have the Tektro RL520 levers those will work with the Mini-vs. I have the set of Chromoplastics that I want to use - my immediate concern was clearance. If it not going to work what cantis or full size Vs should I look at?
