I do love Main Coon cats, but I would never get one. Too much work to keep the fur nice. I have to brush my brittish shorthair every day because of her double layer of fur (her top and bottom layer are the same lenght generating a fur that has twice the thickness of a normal cat fur and is 10 times softer but also spreads way more hair around my house).

We brush him once a week, and his coat is fab! (does get everywhere tho..)

We have no probs with any of them , less hassle than any of the other breeds we have had fur wise . Only if they get sticky buds or something , but yes it does get everywhere ......

But then we are stupid enough to have three .......

Lovin the new kitteh posts....
Bertie and Meg have collars on now, we have a cat flap fitted.... jingling everywhere.
I locked the cat flap last night, as Bertie is new to the outdoors, he still carried on head butting it and clawing at it for about an hour though.... bless. -

Only one of ours is at the mo clever enough to use the cat flap . Maine coons when they are stupid are STUPID . We did have an interesting evening when we had a nocturnal visit from a local scruffy tom cat who came in thru the cat flap in the middle of the night , only to find 3 maine coons who didn't want to share their dinner with him . He's not been back .......

Well, turns out Monty isn't as useless as he makes out. Managed to catch his own dinner today. Then bring it to ours.

What did you guys do the first few times you let your cats out? I'm shit scared that Basil will get too excited exploring and not find his way back.
It is a bit nerve-racking - like packing your child off to school for the first time.I doubt Basil will go all that far to begin with though - well, not so far he can't hear you call for him. Presumably you are letting him out the back as opposed to in the street/where cars are?
My suggestions:
Do it during daylight hours initially.
Do it when you're not going out anywhere - I found a time when I could actually be outside with them for a while (was freezing though as that was December) and gradually increased the length of time I let them stay out for.
Have a packet of Dreamies ready and reward/praise him when he comes back.
Don't fret - mine got me panicking a couple of times when they were slow to come back but they always did eventually.Mine are a year old now and still get so excited every morning about going outside for their garden adventures. It's probably a good thing I don't know what they get up to.

James is getting rounder in the face, but no where else- he is around 8 now.
Is this a sign of something to be concerned about?

Ok, I've come to the conclusion our cats are utter bastards. I can hear them from my room at night and when they're in the garden it sounds like someone's committing some horrible crime.
Plus, they keep bringing in half of animals. Skinned. Little cunts.
I know it's what they do, but we'd come to the conclusion the cats were dopey as fuck! Seems they're actually sneaky little bastard cats. One does have a fat arse though.

I don't think you can blame it on the size of your backside.
