A CRASH that left a cyclist critically ill in hospital happened after a van moved to let a fire engine past, police believe.
The cyclist, a 24-year-old man from the Selby area, suffered serious head injuries when the Citroen Berlingo van collided with his bike on the A63 near the A1041 on Sunday.
A fire engine was on its way to a 999 call at the time and it is understood the van pulled aside to let it past, but then collided with the bike.
The fire engine then stopped and its crew provided first-aid until an ambulance arrived. The cyclist was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remains critical but stable.
