  • Surely Jim and a kitten called Gingermouth wouldn't be a good fit? What would they have in common?

  • I would absolutely love to have her if she's still available, I have a garden and two other lovely ladies who would love to help take care of her.... let me know!

  • Apparently I need to post 3 times in order to message you privately - so here's my second - I'm the same person that you've been given the number of - please do let me know if I'm still in with a chance!!

  • To get a kitty to love and care for and spoil a little?

  • Sounds fair to me

  • Londonlady, I feel I have to give Dammit first viewing as he has expressed interest to me for a while now.

He's hopefully coming tomorrow weather providing. Should he for whatever reason decide against it I will give you a call.

    thanks

    George

  • You must first tell the forum of your intentions.

    Slippers, and maybe a muff.

  • Ah okay, well he's very lucky, she's absolutely adorable. Please do let me know if she still needs a home, I'd love to have her. Bea

  • best piece of cat-related advice I was ever given - if you can afford one, get two...

And today I woke up to THIS! :-)

  • ^ hahaha! That's my post! Just realised I was logged in as Markypoos :-)

  • Anyone know of any kittens being born soon/now?

  • You should go to Battersea or the cats protection league or celia Hammond. Always cats, small and large that need a home :-)

  • Or the Blue Cross

  • Thanks, have been down there but my better half is quite set on knowing the home they came from....strange I know but I think she had a bad experience with a rescue dog

  • ^ That's a shame. So many unwanted kittens/cats end up in places like Celia Hammond and Battersea.

  • Plenty free cats on Gumtree

  • You can look at their owners. Check if their nails are clean, check the furniture for dust...

And look at the kittens parent[s].

That is a real shame. We got our dog from Battersea and he's basically the best pet you could ever wish for...

  • Yeh, I will try and persuade her to have another look. Just thought someone here might know of some.
Will have a quick look at gumtree too.
    Thanks all

  • My current cat came from a cat charity, and he is now 8 years old. His mum was the rescued one, she was found pregnant and locked in an abandoned suitcase. He spent his first 7 weeks with his mum and that what makes all the difference. (I first met him at 3 weeks - have the pics somewhere). The charity also had him checked out by the vet and gave me 12 weeks free cover with Pet Plan insurance.

My previous cat also came from a charity but he was hand reared, being abandoned in a cardboard box in a dual carriageway at 1 week old. He lived just under three very happy pampered years until he got bitten by another cat, got an infection he couldn't fight and we had to say goodbye.

The main difference in getting a kitten is ensuring it has been with its mum 7 weeks (which is why it is never a good idea to buy a kitten from a pet shop - you don't know how long they were weaned). Cats who don't spent 7 weeks with their mum have lower immune systems and are likely to die prematurely. Most cats full immunity builds up years 1-3. Apparently once a cat reaches 3 years old it will survive anything.

  • How disgusting of a person would you have to be to lock any living things in a suitcase? I am feeling quite sad right now...

Are kittens hard to look after? I am thinking of getting a cat and would quite like a kitten so I can be with it from the beginning but I am worried due to my lack of experience, I might not be able to do a good enough job...

  • +100000 for getting animals from a shelter, so many little animals in them looking for a stable home and some love.

Think there's a myth perpetuated that shelter animals come with plenty of baggage and various issues and while that is true in part the same can be said of animals bought as puppies and kittens.

4 rescue dogs at home and very happy and relaxed dogs they are. Would never go anywhere else, because if you do you continue the problem of so many unhomed pets in the country.

  • Extra- they are pretty easy to look after, just make sure you have a litter tray, a water bowl and a food bowl to take care of the vital functions, and then be prepared to give it plenty of affection.

When we got Tesla she hid, terrified and shaking under a chair for the whole of the first evening, then by the end of the second evening she was asleep on my lap, purring contentedly.

  • +1 to Dammit

Also, having a kitten is excellent practice for child-rearing. The vet told me (with Cat V7) that I should treat him as a recalcitrant child. I let him get away with murder, allowed him to be fussy with his food, and do absolutely anything.

Cat V8 was subject to far more discipline and a water pistol, as well as knowing his food doesn't get changed more than once a day. (but he is still completely spoilt rotten).

As to the comment re the abandoned suitcase - I don't know what was worse, that or the three one week old kittens in a cardboard box. People can be so cruel and thoughtless.
