my method is nice oily chain, not to oily though, chain tension perfect, to tight makes noise and to loose i find sketchy
it is quieter when its got abit loose though, also with a new cog and a chain thats a few months old it dose make a noise for a while to wear in, but maybe every one else knows that oredy, but i dont know, could be the problem...

Fuck that, chains should be tight, dry and noisy as hell.
^Not a joke, that's how I roll.

noisey bikes make me nervous , chains need lube, otherwise they wear out and could snap, would take time but it happens...
seriusly my knee and chest learnt the hard way

Problem with nice and oily is that a little too much lube mean dirt will stick on the chain, and cause it to wear, whether less oil will cause the chain to rust (likely).
Best thing is to be careful when lubing, never put too much, it'll feel fine the first few weeks, until eventually you'll find it become noisy again due to dirt in the chain.

when my chain makes any noise i just buy a new one, but sometimes it easier just to build a new bike.

i find taking the chain off and soaking in wd40 or gt40 and whipe down gets rid of most the dirt/grit

Degrease the chain.
Then use the silicon spray grease type.
Less dirt. Less noise. -

chain link popped off in transit the other day, i replaced the link but now my chain is making a lot of noise. is it too tight? not enough oil? its a very old chain, i have a new one coming in the post, im just interested.

i heard that wd40 is really bad for your chain. is this wrong?

So, i have the same problem and it's driving me mad. Gets worse when you start slowing down too.
I'm running a 1/8th miche track sprocket, sram 1/8th SS chain, and a BrevM 1/8th chainring. Have tried less chain tension, degreased the chain, re-lubed it all to no avail :(

Pinches, if you haven't already, check your chainline.
hold the back wheel and look through he seatstay gap at the chain*. It should be straight from cog to chainring. If its off it can cause noise.
*not while riding

All brand new:
SRAM Omnium with GXP BB (developed for use only with 1/2 x 1/8 chain) - 44mm chainline
Shimano Dura-Ace Track 7600 1/8-Inch Cog - 44mm chainline
Izumi Standard 1/2 x 1/8 chainWithout the chain the cranks and the wheel spin silently
With the chain all the noise comes from where it engages with the cogLots of noise regardless of how tight or loose the chain is.

It's the noise of quality.

Izumi chains are pretty noisy

Everyone says they sound like a chainsaw, but on my Look 464/Omniums with stock ring/EAI Steel cog/Super Toughness/Finishline Wet or Wet Ceramic combo, with the chain tension just so it's damn near silent. Probably the quietest drivetrain I've ever used.

Sounds like a helicopter.
Plus totally silent on the chainring but noisy on the cog?

My Quietest drivetrain is the track one omnium/DA 51t/Izumi standard/EA

New chains are sprayed with some crap anti-rust stuff. This is Not a lubricant. Clean the chain and apply a decent chain lube. I like the finish line wet one. but during the winter salty water seized the chain overnight so i drown it in 3 in 1 oil. messy but it worked. kept applying it every time the chain didn't look wet.
