Thanks for the replies. They are marathon Supreme 32c, so not exactly massive.
Was thinking about a chain tug as I have a spare, but don't think there is enough room in the dropout - the alfine has kind of keyed washers to keep the cable straight, would have to put it flat-ways outside the dropout and either way I dont know if there is enough thread on the nut to do that safely.
Thanks svendrin, feel a bit daft now, will try a 180 tomorrow if there is one lying around
