Battle: Los Angeles
Staring Aaron Eckhart.
I expected a lot from this as I love the idea of the world being invaded by aliens but have not yet seen a decent film about it. Close Encounters was great but it wasn't really an invasion, it was more about the music that they made for the aliens and how one man wanted to go to space with them.
3.5/10
**Warped Tour '03
**If you enjoyed the first three Tony Hawkes soundtracks then you might well enjoy this too. Filmed in North America it features an assortment of household name pop punk bands.
4/10
**Misfits (Series one)
**This one isn't mine. I have seen a few episodes though and can confirm that five children gain superpowers whilst working for a gym in their summer holidays. They help each other overcome problems using their powers and sometimes get into trouble.
2.5/10
Braindead
Staring Timothy Balme and Diana Penalver
Directed by Peter Jackson (LOTR fame) this film is about a monkey that bites a woman. She gets ill from the monkey bite and starts biting people herself. It turns out she has a virus from the monkey and then she needs everyone's help to get better.
5/10
Apocalypto
Staring Mel Gibson
Jungle Mayans and a type of Proto-Mayan fight each other to take control of the temple. One man has his girlfriend taken away by the Proto-Mayans and he wants her back.
5/10
Silent Hill
Staring Sean Bean and Radha Mitchell
I loved Radhah Mitchell in Drag Me to Hell and I loved Sean Bean in Sharpe and Goldeneye. Silent Hill does feature these two actors but it does not feature them on their best form. I never played the computer game but I wanted to.
2/10
Dungeons and Dragons
Staring Jeremy Irons and Marlon Wayans
I bought this from the market as I thought the cast looked fantastic. I never got round to watching it though. A friend told me it was awful so I don't want to watch it.
1/10
The Italian Job
Staring Michael Caine and Noel Coward
This is the original which I have not actually seen. I have seen the remake though and it was really poor so the original can't have been that good either. It does have Michael Caine in it though and he is certainly very popular.
3/10
**Jumpin' Jack Flash, Bedazzled and Serving Sara
**Staring Whoopi Goldberg, Brendan Fraser, Elizabeth Hurley and Matthew Perry.
This is the three DVD combo boxset. Sadly it is missing Serving Sara. I have not seen Serving Sara or Jumpin' Jack Flash but if Bedazzled is anything to go by both these films will be great. Bedazzled is a wonderful film which combines the haunting fear of Devil's Advocate with the playfulness of Notting Hill.
8/10
Thirteen
Staring Holly Hunter and Evan Rachel Wood
It seems this film was nominated for at least four awards. I can't see why as it was average at best. Three young girls try to find boyfriends but can't because they are struggling with drug problems and self harm issues.
4/10
Revelation
Staring James D'Arcy and Terence Stamp
Fans of Dan Brown and David Icke will really be in for a treat with this.
Science, religion and evil meet and fight. The winner will either save or end the world.
3/10
Time
Staring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried
It's the future and everyone has the time inserted under the skin on their forearms. Everyone's time is different and you can get more or less time depending on how much work you do. Things get mixed up when a man steals some time from another man and then wins a hell a lot of money and buys even more time.
2/10
Spun
Staring Jason Schwartzman, John Leguizamo and Brittany Murphy
This is very very similar to Thirteen but the cast are older and they are all addicted to speed. In Thirteen I seem to remember slightly more variation in the types of drug being used. If you were a fan of the Mighty Ducks saga then you might like this as 'Goldberg' has a small cameo role.
4/10
**Open Water
**Staring Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis
This is a true story but NOT a documentary. I would say that it is like a cross between Blair Witch and Jaws. I can't remember how it ends so it can't have been that good.
3.5/10
Supersize Me
Staring Morgan Spurlock
This IS a documentary. A man tries to eat Mcdonalds every day for a year and then does a health test afterwards to see how healthy he is. He gets depressed and fat and feels upset for America.
5/10
The Descent
Staring Shauna Macdonald
The Descent is about a group of girls that enjoy caving but get stuck in a very remote cave in the jungle. They get really lost underground and try to find a way out but can't because there are other people out there who keep putting them off and kill them. I believe one or two of them do escape but are utterly traumatised by their ordeal and they find it very hard to adjust to life back in NY.
2/10
**Battle Royale II
**Staring Tatsuya Fujiwara and Ai Maeda
Much like the first Battle Royale this film features many, many schoolchildren who get stranded on an island but have to kill each other because they find out that the airplane crash was faked and they are actually in a game show run by the adults. I haven't actually seen this film but I am fairly sure it's just a rehash of the first one.
**Hot Fuzz
**Staring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
Westcountry based comedy about stupid police, clever police and corrupt police. One of them is from the city and has killed before and all the others are from the countryside and have not killed before. Some murders in the village mean that everyone is fighting for survival and need to be saved.
1/10
**Paranormal Activity 3
**Staring ?
This was very scary and I struggled to actually keep my eyes on the screen. I once watched The Exorcism of Emily Rose by myself at 7pm in the evening and even when I woke up in the morning I was still shaking with fear. This wasn't that scary but it was VERY scary.
5/10
North
Staring lots of Canadian skateboarders
A mediocre skateboard video based in Canada. I can't remember ANYTHING about this so I know that it must be bad. Even when I look at the photos/stills on the back of the box I can't remember watching it.
1/10
The History Boys
Staring James Corden and Richard Griffiths
When I saw this I thought it was going to be a remake of the History Boys where Robin Williams inspires a group of young boys to learn history outside of class and they form a small gang that meet in the hollowed out trunk of an oak tree. I remember they exchange stories, smoke pipes and talk about girls, but mainly they just love history and love their teacher.
This wasn't like that at all and I gave up after 20 mins.
