There has been quite a profusion of beautiful italian tin on the forum lately, this, the mattolini's, the santini, the Pog...regardless of any new shit that comes along the romance and the character of these bikes will always hold some sort of power or energy.
I don't know if it's the fact that they are steel, and you know deep down that well looked after (even not so well looked after) they will still be performing well in another 30 years is what makes them special, tho I just cannot get as wistful or enthuse with passion when I look at a new tour bike...will people that are 15 now be getting excited about crabon in 30 years?
Is it that some guy (probably with a fag in his mouth, a greasy sweaty brow, and forearms like ship rope) with a great deal of skill and pride made it, and that in turn imbibes the frame with his character, and it is that that gives them the magic they continue to hold after all these years?
I find it comforting that regardless of age, gender, nationality, political or religious differences all the people that made these frames would find value, merit and pride in each others craftsmanship...Chapeu...this is what I love about this forum.
anyhoo...bump...nice steel...

56cm is my absol max I want to stretch. The extra half cm is bit like the sliver of choc in monty python.....will take me way over. Measure again and let me know...god knows I have no justification to have one or really afford it. But if I sell my de rosa frame, you never know!

Very nice frame

I will measure the frame again with millimetric accuracy tomorrow afternoon and post the results...

Lovely bike and wish I wasn't such a short a$$... free bump!

As promised, I've just measured the frame again (several times!) using the non-drive side for better accuracy. It is 56cm centre of BB to top of seat tube (which pokes up about 5mm more at front and rear as a bit of design bling) and 56cm centre of seat tube to centre of head tube measured along the top tube. In other words it is 56cm square!

I've only just been told it is actually wednesday today!!!
**** NOW SOLD ****
Having spent a long time sourcing this frame last year, I've very reluctantly decided I have to sell the bike as it is just that bit too small for me and I need the money to fund a pair of track racing wheels - oh well, at least the poor old bike has had a nice quiet winter hanging in my loft, not getting wet and cold, so it shouldn't be feeling too unloved!!
I bought the frame last year for £550 from this forum and it was worth every penny of that. It has been refinished in a gorgeous metallic coppery bronze colour (before I bought it) and was literally just like new. Since building it, I've probably ridden it about 20 times - it really is a special ride and I believe is made from a combination of 531 and SLX tubing. Masi was (and probably still is!) one of the very best of the best Italian makers and this frame really shows that in both beauty and riding.
I can only find one very small chip near the rear dropout.
I had the wheels custom built for me - they are Dura Ace hubs with Ambrosio Nemesis "La Reine du Nord" tubular rims, DT Swiss Revolution spokes and gold nipples. The front is radially laced, the rear is cross laced on the drive side and radially on the non-drive side. Again, these wheels have only been ridden about 20 times and are beautiful to ride and spin for ever!
I fitted a modern Ultegra 6600 groupset with a 53/39 chainset and 11-28 cassette. I also have the original Campag Masi pantographed downtube shifters (see http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=sm5xtt&s=5 for a picture of them on the frame) which are included in the sale.
Other details - Vittoria tubulars in great condition, Campag Record headset, 3TTT stem and 3TTT ErgoPower Due handlebars, Shimano 600 aero seatpost and Rolls saddle..
The frame measure 56 cm centre to top of seat tube and 56 cm centre to centre top tube.
I would prefer to sell the complete bike, but if someone wants to buy the frame, I will sell that and then sell the wheels and (probably!) the groupset separately. I won't sell either the wheels or the groupset etc separately before selling the frame.
I would like £860 for the complete bike, or £450 for the frame, £220 for the wheels (with tubs and a spare new tub), £180 for the groupset and then I'll have to think about stem, seatpost, saddle and handlebars!
I live in North Holmwood, Dorking and you are most welcome to come and have a leer - alternatively, I could meet a serious buyer at Herne Hill on Sunday mornings or meet halfway in somewhere like New Malden, Streatham etc...
Here's a picture of the complete bike (pedals not included in sale)...
