Could be that the chain jumped onto a larger sprocket, pulling the back wheel forward. This happened to my £0 pub bike and it bent the dropouts.
Replacement axle will be a fiver or so, then stick a single freewheel on it and you're good to go.

cheers, my dropouts are slightly bent will that make a difference?

If they're only slightly bent, they're easy enough to bend back - use a big adjustable spanner or stilson wrench. They are pressed steel by the looks of it, so should bend quite easily.
So i was riding single speed using one of the rings on the cassette (bad idea?) on Carlton Corsa. Anyway for some reason the axle bent causing the wheel to wedge into the chainstays causing a bad crash. Anyway is there any reason as to why the axle just gave way? do i need to get a new hub with just one cog or just replace the axle and the bearings?
Also there was always a problem with the tyre clearance of the chainstays where it would always rub against the frame. Do i need to get a new thinner set of wheels?
Finally as you can see in one of the photos the chainset and the casette seem to be off angle. is the frame bent?
