The guy:
"what's the point of cycling so fast if you are going to stop at the the red light."

http://road.cc/content/news/83496-slow-down-or-else-sustrans-warns-cyclists
I grumbled about Strava segments on links2schools routes when I worked for the mighty charity, think I was politely ignored back then.
I often ride from Temple Meads to Avonmouth for work, and sometimes go through Ashton Court and also use the various cycle paths. Basically if you can't go at speed they are useless and much, much slower than using the road. The solution has to be dedicated cycle paths without peds at all. One of the cycle paths goes past a primary school and another is used by the locals to walk their kids to another primary school, so if I use them I run the risk of coming across a mother hen and her entire brood spread across the the cycle path (these days often all wearing high-vis jackets) and of course dog walkers with dogs either on lead or off.
Basically they are totally useless for a decent cyclist so you are forced back onto the road. Cyclists and peds don't play well, and the solution is too expensive for the councils to contemplate. Another dead end.

Ooh and while I'm on Ashton Court, the exit road heading towards Bristol is steep and downhill and has three very severe speed bumps. When I went over them the first time I was in the hoods and the impact was so severe I nearly lost grip and would have gone face first into the tarmac. Very, very poor for cycling over, in fact the worst I have ever gone over, made more difficult by the incline. Oh and right across the entire road. If you're on a MTB maybe ok, but on a roadbike very difficult obstacles.
Fuckers

Pretty sure I bent a rear axle on that very hill many years ago -was a freewheel type hub so lots of unsupported axle.

One of our favourite strava nobbers on here thought it was fine to race for segments outside schools.

^^Ooh ooh, me too. In 1986 I was out in Ashton Court on my one-day old Specialized Rockhopper and utterly stacked it at 30mph over the bump at the bottom, which I didn't even see. Bent the forks and still have the chainring scar on my shin. Very embarrassing, but luckily impeccably OG. /csb

I want to see this menace bump. Link to streetview?
-
• #7135
Well it's been a long time since I and the bump met on that far off frosty morn, but I think this is it, Kennel Lodge Rd, looking back up the hill.
My only real recollection of the crash is lying bloodied in a heap of bent bike with stars whizzing round my head and a woman jogger pranced past with her nose in the air and didn't even glance at me.
To be fair, I had been a very bad cyclist #backontopic

are there still deer up the hill on the right of your pic? I was there in the summer, mtb trail in the forest is good
-
• #7137
Loads of deer there still and the trails are still really good.
And yes those are the humps. No escape from them, and I'm not sure you get a true impression of how steep that is

Calling myself out, I completely mistimed pulling out into the road earlier nearly getting myself killed and forcing an emergency stop. I'll pay closer attention in future!

I saw a guy on holloway road this morning, Im not sure exactly what happened but I was stopped at the red outside cycle surgery, look to my right so see a guy overtaking a van in the right hand lane through the red into the crossing and do some sort of front flip with his bike landing on top of him
it was like there was an invisible 1 foot wall infront of him (or something got stuck in his front wheel)
- I laughed because serves you right for skipping the red
- He sheepishly dragging his shit bike to the side of the road much to the humour of the van driver he overtook
- I laughed because serves you right for skipping the red

There was a very angry guy heading south down Albion Road and Essex Road in black tights/grey top on a black road bike this morning who seemed to have a real problem with anyone else on the road he encountered. Just on this short stretch I witnessed a pedestrian who was abused for crossing the road, then various gestures directed at a driver for no apparent reason, who he then tried to overtake as the car was clearly indicating to overtake a bus, and obvs found that suddenly there was no room. He then could not wait for a guy to finish transporting a forklift trolley across the road and made an "I'll teach you a lesson" close pass by a ped crossing the road. He then turned off my route and my experience of the Ride of Rage was over.
This chap needs to chill out. He might be in a hurry and think he has supreme right of way over everything but is guaranteeing himself an accident by seeking to make things more dangerous than they need to be, apparently to prove a point. Any of the issues he was getting uppity about could be easily predicted and avoided just by looking at what was happening on the road and responding accordingly. Despite the aggression, undertaking, abuse and selfishness, he didn't get anywhere faster than me. He was also damn slow for someone giving it the beans.
However, he didn't jump any lights. Well done. -

Afore mentioned white Cube man spoiling for a fight this am. Change my route or ride-by kidney punch?
-
• #7142
^^ My absolute least fave type of cyclist. Enraged, ill informed, arrogant. Do none of us any good at all and get more indignant every time they ride. This city is too busy and anarchic for those levels of angst.

Kidney punch obvs. Then change route if the fallout is ugly

Is it me or is there a rise in self-righteous Go-pro helmet mounted cyclists?
-
• #7145
I haven't heard any of them being particularly self-righteous, but I've definitely noticed an uptick in helmet mounted cameras. It might just be a combination of them getting cheaper, and more cyclists on the road though.
I just imagine it makes for incredibly dull home videos

It does make for undisputed insurance claims when you get SMIDSY'ed however.

This morning - 10ish- from Old St roundabout to Holborn. Guy on a brakeless fixed, short dark hair, headphones (natch) cut-off denims and long socks.
There's a better than even chance he's been here, so fella I'm calling you out. You ride like a dick; and the insulting thing of it is you clearly can ride. But your disregard for any rules, the safety of others, hell even your own skin left me seriously hoping the traffic sorts you out some time soon.
Your arrogance and stupidity was breathtaking.

Whoa, really? Care to share the anecdote? I was tempted by a go-pro, but more for general use - seems like a nifty piece of kit, plus I've been amused by the idea of strapping it to one of my cats and seeing what she gets up to while I'm out. I have a suspicion it's mainly sleeping and eating though.

Not a single anecdote, more collective. The advent of helmet-borne cameras has led to a increase in skull-embedded cameras.
You're no roadie. You don't shave your legs.
