they're not hamster size though, big as cats/small dogs and they sometimes run along for a while when you're climbing mountains on yer bike in the Alps
A friend of mine, who I've ridden through many parts of the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Dolomites with, has never seen a marmot and refuses to believe that they exist. I think the marmots are in on the joke, as quite often I've seen them and heard them whistling but when Ken looks they hide behind rocks.
