Foot retention really helps with control, especially on a fixed bike with no back brake as to have a solid substitute for a brake you need to be able to skid seated, very hard with no foot retention.
You really have 3 options for foot retention
clips and straps

If you want to get properly into riding I'd recommend clipless.
If you want to ride around casually and comfortably I'd say freestyle straps would be your best bet.
If you want your bike to look period correct then clips and straps are the way.
