Back in the day it wasn't quite so well appreciated that SFSB* and that MTBs were better off being considerably smaller than road bikes. My current MTB has a frame about 8" shorter than my first MTB!

Maybe, just like with track & road bikes these days. Some people just prefer the looks of a horizontal top tube?
