• Right, next project. The Brompton's going to have to take a back seat (again) because I need this bike for a holiday in three weeks' time, and I'd like to get it fitted between then and now as Cycliste very kindly bought me a bike fitting at Condor for my birthday last year.

As the title suggests, it's a Cervelo S2. The summary at the moment is that it's going to have an Ultegra Di2 groupset, mildly hacked with an internal battery and miniture satellite shifters for the rear mech under the bar tape, Zipp wheels and mostly Ritchey finishing kit.

So, frame and forks in position:

But not for long, as the frame needs some modifications to take a Di2 install. The first step of which is to drill a hole in my nice new frame. The hole needs to be in the top of the top tube, just behind where the cables for the front derailleur and rear derailleur would go on a mechanical install. While Cervelo don't drill the hole they do at least show where it needs to go.

It's a bit nerve-wracking drill a new carbon frame, so I started with a pilot hole and expanded it gradually. It turns out there's an aluminium plate bonded into the carbon laminate at this point, presumably to add a bit of reinforcement around the holes.

Having attacked the frame with a drill, it was now time to attack it with a sanding cylinder in a Dremel. There's a hole in the bottom of the bottom bracket shell, and on a mechanical installation the shifter cables would come out of this.

It needs to be expanded so that you can fit the Di2 junction box inside it (although I'm now wondering whether I should put the junction box inside the seat tube instead) which it now does.

I've also cut down the steerer tube and fitted the forks/stem/bars. I'm using an expander plug at the moment - the 3T forks come with an ali shim and some epoxy to bond it in place, but I'll fit that (and slam the stem, probably) once I've had the bike fitting done. The stem's probably going to be changed too, to a Ritchey C260 which isn't red.

That's it for now. More to follow.
