Cargo/Utility Bike (Home Made - Fillet Brazed)

  • Hi guys,

I took this project on as part of my Final Major Project at uni. I decided to design and build my own bike, which was suitable for day to day cruising around Bournemouth. It needs to be able to carry some food shopping, beer ect...

I would have started a blog sooner, but been super busy with uni work. Now thats out the way I'm going to share it with you.

Started off my sketching rough shapes and designs down on paper, then moved on to BikeCAD and Rattle CAD. Both are helpful for different things.

This was kind of right but not quite there. (bikecad)

Decided this would meet all my needs and desires. (rattle cad)

Moves on a few weeks of pain steakingly designing and making a jig and Trying to figure out how what types of tubes to buy ect...

Front triangle tacked in place, just got the SS to mitre then its good to go.

Started on the rack, this required bending tubes. Which I was not looking forward to do... However it turned out well.

Made fast progress on the rack, started making nice cedar and oak bits for it.

Brass bolts to match the brass fillets.....

After many hours of polishing and cleaning and sourcing components, built it up took some photos.

With some help from Martin at The Bicycle Company in Poole. He built up the wheels for me and supplied the saddle (its his shop colours).

I still haven't taken it out for a long ride as it has to be assessed and looked after until my exhibitions in June.

But it does ride straight with no hands, so I reckon that's a success.

  • looks good!

  • awesome jig. consider the design stolen aaand thank you

This is the tried and tested design of the guys at The Bicycle Academy. I do regret not making it adjustable though.

  • It actually reminds me of a lo-pro, but one that has gone opposite the rules and gone upwards with a massive head-tube. You can even see in your original design the arching top-bar influence. You should call this bike/geometry a 'hi-pro', trademark it and sell it if it rides ok.

  • I'm really pleased you utilised your further education to educate yourself further, ie you actually used your time to achieve something, and not done a phd on madonna's career (everytime I think of that I wince)...
Can you be a little more involving tho...ie ......I like how you stiffened the main 'triangle' (in your case a quadrangle) with the struts for the carrier....tho...explain what you did with the forks? how you got over the super long steerer tube issue? did the guy from the bike shop tap the bottom bracket threads for you?
One other moan...it's Pain Stake...ie like you would stake a bet...
    Other than that...looks ace...well done...;D...there is hope.

Who did a PhD on Madonna's career like?

If it was a UK PhD thesis it should be publicly available.

  • Great Build, Fantastic execution !

Makes a refreshing change from NJS / HHSB / Tarck .

Doesn't the part holding the bb slide along the base of the jig? and the headtube gets positioned at different heights as well, no?

  • Awesome project btw!

Thanks... I sure can elaborate, just didnt know what you lot would want to know. So was waiting for someone to ask.

I wanted a rack which wouldn't put the weight of the load on the steering as most racks do. Also by having such a long HT (300mm) it obviously meant the front triangle would need stiffening, so this was the solution I came up with as I didn't want to add another TT in. Which is what a lot of frames like this do (old butchers bikes).

I bought the forks which had a steerer of 255mm, I extended it by cutting it in half and turning up a plug which could have both pieces of steerer slotted onto. I then silver soldered them together, creating quite a quick and easy solution.

I bought an existing BB shell (English 73mm) from Ceeway, this is where I bought all the tubing from aswell. I went for standard 4130 cromoly tubing. Nothing fancy as this is a prototype and I have a limited budget.

    Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the great feedback guys!

Thanks man. No that doesn't happen. Although it could easily be done with a little bit of time spend on the milling machine.

  • Really interesting build. are you going sans brakes or is there a coaster brake hidden in there?

There is a sturmey archer s2c in there, which im yet to have an opinion on. Considering fitting a front brake but I'll see how effective the coaster is for now.

  • So what is your degree?

  • So what is your degree?

I'm studying Model Making at The Arts Uni Bournemouth. Took me a while to persuade my tutors to give me the go ahead for this project!

  • Is it a model of a giant bike?

Looks cool, good job. Lived in Bournemouth for about 18 years :) Do you have any info about the jig? I'm making another bike soon and may actually use a jig this time ...
