Removing chrome

Posted on
  • Im new to the forum and recently purchased a Carlton frame through here.

the frame has been chromed but its obviously seen better days and i wanted to remove it, I've had a little google but a lot of the info im getting is car based.

anyone with experience in this who give me some tips? need a relatively cheap and easy route

    thanks.

  • First, you should start by seeing if you can clean it up. Rub with silver foil and WD40.

You'll be surprised what some elbow grease can do.

  • its got some rust pitting and has flaked off in areas, so im looking to remove it all to repaint, thanks for the advice though.

  • Just sand it flat so the paint has a key to stick to. Sand any rusty areas down to the steel and maybe treat with rust killer if its pitted the metal. No need to remove the chrome.

  • i may decide to raw the frame and clear coat it, weighing up my ideas atm, thanks for the advise guys.
