Got a brake on it finally: had to enlarge the hole at the rear and file down the underneath of the brake to get it to clear the tyre. Not a very neat job but hopefully won't need to use it as much, been fun if occasionally alarming riding brakeless.
Have sanded down most of the front forks all bar the fiddly bits. Sandpaper has it limitations. Will decide whether to lacquer it raw or paint it white. Hmmm
