• I'm bringing a bike home to mum on Friday. I'll have to ride from Central Station to Gosforth at about 11pm. It's about 10 years since I lived in Newcastle and they keep changing the roads. What do you think is the best route? It's a 3 speed Gazelle so not nippy, but the old-lady-go-to-church effect means people tend to give me space :)

  • The cycle path all the way down Great North Road?

  • Perfect from the start of the moor, but what's the best route through the town? All I can remember is the flyovers and dual carriage ways round Haymarket and Barras Bridge, pretty sure it's not bike able.

  • Yes, that's Newcastle. Lots of possible routes through town. Which do you find most bike-friendly, especially round Haymarket to the top of the Great North Road?

  • I do this route daily - and would recommend to come out of the station, go up Grainger Street to Monument, up Northumberland Street to Haymarket, then you can pick up the cycle path up past the Civic Centre, Robinson Library, Brandling Park and onto the GNR cycle path all the way to Gosforth High Street.

  • Thank you Dave. I wouldn't have thought of Northumberland Street - I think it was peds only when I lived in Newcastle. Good to know, much nicer than either Percy or John Dobson street. (Unless it's been turned into a 3 lane dual carriageway or something, like happened to the road where the Broken Doll used to be!)

  • It is still peds only but you should be fine at 11pm as long as you avoid the drunks. I try to avoid JD street as a rule after a bad experience with a bus windscreen.
