Any recommendations for a good set of lights < 40 pounds, that can be fixed semi-permanently to the frame? Nothing to easy to steal that is..
I really want to avoid those ugly large plastic attachments that often come with cateye lights. Minimal is good.
Thieves will tear anything off if they fancy. Good lights cost more than 40 Quid. The best solution I've found is to have good removable lights. Two mounting systems I think are quite good: O-ring (Lupine and copy-cats) and, despite your reservations, Cat-eye (a number of makers design around them). There are an increasing number of good lightweight and very bright LED based lamps with Lithium battery technology available. One of my lamps that uses the CatEye mount is called "Force Flow", weighs only 250g (including mounting hardware, battery etc.) and delivers >900 Lm of light. Its battery is only 6x4x3cm large but at 5ah is sufficient to run for 3h. To put it on and off a bicycle I find it more confortable than even my Lupine--- which I like to use when going from bicycle to bicycle, especially in the winter. There are also a number of extremely competitive Chinese LED lamps out there .. all cost more than 40 Quid but even if 20..

thanks for the pointer to lupine. i'll check them out.
I really wanted to do away with the plastic mounts. I can't seem to find these "force flows". Could you point me ?

Here is a link to the maker selling them on eBay for a good price:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Force-Flow-LED-2-Sport-Lampe-fur-Fahrrad-Blau-/200893905012Pitwalk (the maker of the lamp) normally charges more than twice that amount;
http://www.pitwalk.eu/shop/Beleuchtung/For-ce-Flow-LED-2-Sportlampe.htmlThat's the new version with high/low switch. I have the previous model without the low and its BRIGHT.
Here is a page with some good pictures of the version1 lamp and its battery: http://www.jehlebikes.de/force-flow-cannon-1-led-leuchte-akku-ladegeraet-schwarz.html#thumb
The Force Flow lamps are reasonably well made. Not quite up to the standard of my Lupine but a fraction of the price.

If you want to do away with the look of plastic, the rear Moon Comet seats on your saddle rails. I got one and it's good (so long as you remember to charge it!).

I would recommend the exposure flare with a saddle rail, it's removable but about as discreet as you're going to get, and unholy bright.
Unfortunately, you need a shit-ton of space available on your rails behind the seatpost, and the light tends to switch modes when you hit a bump.
