Ok I've got this now, after some epic internetting which ended up turning up this on Streetview:

Obviously not the same place but had me wondering for a moment!
I have actually been past this place before, but I'm not sure why

'got' in the 'know where it is' sense, not the 'have tagged' sense..

I'd filled in the relevant photography forms in triplicate, submitted them with a proof of address, the fee and my passport. Couldn't be arsed to ride over there though.

I asked her why I had to have permission and she just kept saying "because it's a prison" as if I was asking a ridiculous question.

If you're in a public place there's certainly nothing a private security guard can do to stop you doing anything; furthermore legally speaking the only way a police officer could ask you not to take a photo is under anti-terrorism powers, nothing to do with it being a prison. Basically if you're stood on public ground you can take a photograph in any direction you care to, regardless of what happens to be in the image.

I know, we had a lecture on it in college once. I just didn't fancy walking away from my bike to take the photo whilst she was being a dick.

Yeah that's fair enough.
