  • By the way, the visor is not removable. Once I had positioned it correctly, more strips wrapped over the rim held it in place. It is fixed.
An idea for a next one perhaps.

You could use quality street wrappers, or a sharpie for sunnier days

  • great progress so far, next step, preparing for uci approval?

Obviously you're not serious and obviously the UCI would never approved something like this. But from what I gather, it would be permitted in UK time-trialling.
    Anyone to confirm this?

  • By this point I thought I had done enough to get the shape right / I didn't want to spend any longer on it.
Next, in an attempt to get the surface very smooth I decided to balance the helmet tail down at the edge of my desk and pour the PVA right over it (avoiding the visor).

The idea was that the surface it would leave as it settled and stiffened up would be as smooth as liquid flowing and it would blur out any minor imperfections remaining. The excess dripped off of the end and back into the bottle.

  • Clever.

  • Aero bukkake.

  • please don't ruin your carpet, it's my favourite part of this thread.

Would this need wind tunnel testing?

  • wow you're making 5 of them

what sort of price will they sell for do you think ?
i might dibs a bit of ldnfgss.com history

  • in the rep section james1234 can read my hysterical laugh now

idea is good, but have you made it a bit thicker, to allow drying off before dripping off the helmet?

  • ^^^ casting seems a bit excessive, vacuum forming might be more appropriate

Yes, you can wear what you like on your head in CTT time trials, we only care about the length of your sleeves.

Don't worry, there are plenty of threads in the carpet, if you ruin some, there will still be plenty left. Sacrifices are a natural concomitant of all innovation.

  • After the final coating of PVA the helmet was ready for use if only used in the dry. The fit was such that it stayed in place very well without any straps. However I wanted to do as complete a job of it as I could. It should be usable in inclement weather as well as fair, so it would need sealing. It had crossed my mind to put just a lacquer over it to seal it and still show off its paper construction, but I decided that it was unusual enough and I wanted to see just what level of finish I could achieve. I would paint it and leave the inside sealed but unpainted.

The painting stage of the project was by far the longest. Not having any proper studio/workshop/shed to work in and to leave my work I had to do all the spraying outside, in front of the house where I live. This meant I always had to wait for the right conditions (adequate daylight, very little or no wind, no rain). This was quite tiresome.

When I was shopping for paint a surprisingly helpful lady recommended that, considering the material I wanted to paint onto, I use plastic primer.

please can someone photoshop a desk fan onto the table and put a sign on the wall something along the lines of " rolls royce high velocity aerodynamic research and testing facility "

  • the surface is not dissimilar the the zipp firecrest dimples,
which I understand lead to better aerodynamics

  • do you have a colour scheme in mind ? or are you going for the battleship grey look

  • It's like a giant's tear.

no, sparks test facility, or perhaps more aptly "beat the clock"

  • these sparks

  • can someone potato the helmet into this classic image please?
