By this point I thought I had done enough to get the shape right / I didn't want to spend any longer on it.
Next, in an attempt to get the surface very smooth I decided to balance the helmet tail down at the edge of my desk and pour the PVA right over it (avoiding the visor).
The idea was that the surface it would leave as it settled and stiffened up would be as smooth as liquid flowing and it would blur out any minor imperfections remaining. The excess dripped off of the end and back into the bottle.
