Sun was a Raleigh brand along with Carlton by the 60's maybe earlier. Don't know anything about the original Sun. The bike you describe sounds very similar to my first 'proper' bike, a Sun bought secondhand from Beta Bikes* in West Hampstead in 1974. Although nothing special, it took me round East Anglia, the Cotswolds and the south of France. A couple of years later, I joined a proper cycling club (Paddington cc) and turned up on it for my first club run. I'm afraid the embarrassment factor made me get rid of it and find a more suitable mount by the next run, which was a secondhand Mercian.
Sorry to get all nostalgic there. Your mention of Sun brought back memories.
You may know this company by its current name, Madison Cycles.
