2013-06-01 - Norwich 100

Who's doing the Norwich 100 this year?

On a Saturday instead of the usual Sunday this year for some unknown reason.

NEW DATE - SATURDAY 1 JUNE Starting and finishing in the beautiful City of Norwich, this ride takes you through some perfect cycling country with quiet roads and picturesque villages. And you can test your personal best by choosing a 6, 8 or 10 hour time-band.

From the start in the Cathedral Grounds, both routes first head north to Reepham. The short route then loops back past Blickling Hall while the 100-milers head up to the coast and east to the half-way point at Sheringham, then skirting the Broads before returning to the Finish at the Cathedral.

Voted number 1 in The Independent's 10 Best Cycling Events for 2012!

This will be the fourth time I've taken part, and hope to do it in under 6 hours this year. Best time I've managed so far is 6.11.
I will be doing it fixed as usual.

You get a free pint of beer at the end of the ride.

Am considering doing this, but haven't ridden long distances in ages. My longest trip was the 106 miles from Bedford-Norwich, which I did in 8.5 hours, but that was with breaks and maintenance stops (fixing about 5 broken spokes!) Is the 100 difficult? Not sure whether to go for the 8 or the 6 hour band? Would be great to ride with some fixed guys and throw an amicable two fingers to the inevitable horde of roadies.

People say that every year. It gets you a big, organised ride that's a lot of fun.

^^ I know a few people that don't pay and donate the money to charity instead but what Sparky said really.

What's the deal with brakes? I read the event page and it doesn't seem to explicitly state that you need them other than a nod to the highway code.

It's illegal/daft to ride without brakes on the road, so yes, you do need them.

What kind of GI would someone who's done this ride fixed recommend? I currently ride around 61" and wondering if it might be a bit spinny...

I did it on 48:18 and it was ok. Not pleasant on the coastal bit with the headwind though. Gears for me this year.

Cheers - I was concerned about the head winds, a rather large chunk of the route is near the coast.

Maybe I'll bring gears after all...

Getting a bit concerned that I'll be doing this in waterproofs and/or winter gear. Went out yesterday and it was cold. Could of happily worn full gloves rather than my summer mitts.

You can nick my slipstream as long as you do your fair share on the front, comrade. Weather will be awesome: PMA.
