For Sale: Ken Ryall 58x58 Road Frame 1960's

  • Ken was a London cyclist from the 30's who owned a shop in Hounslow after the war. Was the driver/mechanic to Tommy Simpson and the British Tour De France Team on that fateful day on Mount Ventoux.

I have dated the frame to mid 60's, 65-66, based on comparisons with other bikes. Records are kept by his daughter but not publicly available.
Likely to be a Holdsworth due to proximity of shop to factory and his known acquisitions from Holdsworth.
    Reynolds 531 double butted.
Doesn't include pictured Arabesque front mech - just frame.
    Campag dropouts
    Fittings for mudguards
    New Tange headset
    Threads in BB shell good
Paint job not original so i don't think people could accuse you of killing puppies if you wanted a new coat..

    £70
pick up from belsize park/swiss cottage/ hampstead heath or can bring to dalston for Sundays.

    Thanks

  • seen this in the flesh and it's tasty!

  • Would swap for a 57 or 58 track frame also...

  • I will now include a fetching yellow saddle to sweeten the deal ;-)

    Ben
If you think its nice I'll have to to take a look at it. The vendor (another Ben) is well known to me

  • yep too big for me though

  • I knew Ken. Used to be in the Twickenham CC 1975/6/7 where he was a great guy. One of his party tricks was to ride round outside his shop backwards sitting on the handlebars! Bob Arnold was mechanic at shop then, he went on to do quite well. Customers included Tony Doyle and Alf Whiteway.
He also pioneered importing continental clothing and tubs at a time when plus fours were seen out on Sundays!
If this was bigger I'd be on it!

  • Has this gone? Would you be willing to post to Brighton? (Can't pm yet but at 6' I think this is a size I'm after and this good be an ideal first build project.

  • .......anyone notice the similarity between a Gillott head badge and a Ken Ryall one?

Awesome! I loved researching on this frame and finding more out about Ken, if you have any other info/photos it would be great knowledge to pin to the frame, just for my own interest..

I really love the condition and feel of the frame but I need to clear some space out. Personally I wouldn't repaint but that's up to whoever buys it, although please an oven job if you do go down that route:-)

I had wondered about the head badge comparison, where there others too that had a similar style?

Currently dibbed for NorthLondonLight, will let you all know soon!

    Thanks,

  • OK sorry i got wrong end of stick, not dibs for NorthLondonLight,
