  • Can somebody tell me what bike is this?
I really think its a khs or a vintage mongoose.
    Thanks!

  • Good point - and the fork crown's certainly Cinelli-esque too
Detailed pic of the seat-tube lug would be good

Just got back, I bitched out and took the train halfway home though. Still got 25 miles in on it, really very lovely. Despite the very odd seatpost having no tilt adjustment; I had to ride with a rakish nodder saddle angle putting all my weight on the bars, my wrists will hurt tomorrow.

You're getting me all excited - It's built with cinelli lugs - here is the BB shell:

    And the fork crown:

Very distinctive indent in the top tube for the rear brake cable:

    brake bridge:

  • oh, seatstay shot coming up

  • It's obviously a well built frame but as to who made it ..... probably British, but it was very common (and probably still is) amongst traditionally tight fisted British cyclists to get frames resprayed cheaply and put on any old stickers they could get hold of. I've seen plenty of "Colnagos" on the road.

Ps. That pink will have to go.

  • Aye, the decals are definitely stickers. I just spotted a Roy Swinnerton sticker on the rim - the wheels were built at his shop, I suppose it's quite probably one of his frames. The pink is staying, I like pink. It's a nice pink. Everyone likes pink right?

  • my wrists will hurt tomorrow.

    My wrists hurt.

  • If by everyone, you mean yourself then yes, everyone likes pink.

  • I knew it!

  • Nice bike Alfie, very noice !

  • ^^Negged for fucking offensive user name.

  • That's his name! Don't you think his life is hard enough?

    It's a Kona mountain troll early 80's

  • You could be right, I am a fat old bloke after all, so maybe eatshit, well, you know, eats shit.

  • Nice bike Alfie, very noice !

    cheers!

less aerobars/gumwalls and a bit of matchy-matchy on the seatspost and stem:

  • It's 1.5cm too tall for me, really. I'll ride it around for a few weeks then have a think.

  • I haven't started trawling Classic Lightweights etc yet, but thought I'd stick this up in case anyone can help narrow my search down.

I haven't pulled the forks out yet, but the BB shell has "401" and "27250" stamped on it and I can just make out "olo" on the rear NDS, so presumably Campag dropouts.

Click on the photo for some more detailed snaps.

    EDIT
I found a 1960 bike on CL s/n 27338, so mine looks to be 1959/60.

Seems it's a Hurricane: Zephyr and Cyclone had wrapover seat stays; Monsoon didn't have pump pegs or a lamp bracket. Intriguingly the Hurricane was available (up to 1959) as fixed gear: my wheelset (Racelite) is of the period and the DTS bosses and gear hanger look unused.

A couple of things that don't quite tie-in though: now the wheels are off, I have confirmed that it has Campag dropouts and not Agrati; my pump pegs are on the seat tube and the '58 had them on the down tube and by '60/'61 they were on the top tube.

Other discoveries are a Villiers lockring and GB bars. Could the mudguards be original? The '58 catalogue describes them as being of "celluloid": this is early plastic? Any ideas on the chainset?

    EDIT v2
Over on RB the chainset has been ID as a Williams and once I knew where to look, I was able to find the Williams mark; according to the catalogue, a C34 would be OE.

Someone pointed out that customers were able to spec modest variations to the catalogue (as he did), which could explain the position of the pump pegs and, presumably, the Campag dropouts.

95% certain now that this is a 1959 Hurricane bought as a "complete single speed cycle", possibly with some variations to the catalogue spec.

  • This one is a custom integrated one, but does anyone make seatposts with this sort of clamp? Wouldn't be too hard to knock one up with an old stem, I expect.

  • I've had BMX posts like that.

  • Salt. Horrible though.

  • Zoom

Some chrome oldschool bmx post also have the same design.

Probably works better in steel than aluminium as it relies on a the housing bending....

  • a C34 would be OE.

    it's not a C34
3 arm would be LC1200 or C1200 etc

what's the date code? this may date the bike more than anything else
    http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/components/williams_identification.html

the ring looks like an LC1200 ring that came on a 1961 CB European i had

  • Opinion on RetroBike, is that it's a C45, which fits the description: "triangular ring pattern".

Found a code on the chainring: ZA, or 1960!

Curious, as the Hurricane was only available as a single speed up to 1959 and this looks to have been that way from the off: the gear hanger and DTS bosses look unused.

More curious still are the Campag dropouts: only the Cyclone was offered with them as an option.

  • what's the seatpost size?
