20years ago pedestrians were fully segregated from traffic with guard rail.
And now we're ripping it all down after a national acknowledgement that it causes/enables drivers to drive faster with the belief that the roadway is theirs and there is no chance of a ped in the way.
I can't help but feel that putting cyclists in a "special area" is not addressing the root issues here, and is in effect papering over the cracks of car centric hostile public spaces and highways.
