What tubing is it?
If it's very thin / higher end then you're best painting it. If not then clearcoat or linseed oil. If you clearcoat, then it will rust slowly underneath if you haven't put some sort of protective coating like primer or jenolite. Jenolite will discolour the metal - sort of blacky stains.
I haven't used linseed oil, but as I understand it you will have to keep reapplying it.
