  • H'okay, purchased this little beauty of a 501 Claud Butler frame some months ago from a friend, for the grand sum of 500 pennies. This thread will follow it's various guises through the times.

The plan was never to build a porn worthy bike (ha, like polishing a turn with a 501 frame) but just something that no matter how many things I have to sell to fund my new business or how poor I am, something that's so cheap I simply have no reason to sell it. Well, this is that bike.

The bike rides incredibly well considering how it looks. Everything has been stripped, cleaned and re-lubed. The wheels are perfectly tru and everything runs very smooth. I'll never clean this bike, just maintain the moving components. In the simplest form, it's a beater..

    Frame + forks: £5
    Shimano 600 BB: £3
    Turbo saddle: £3
    SR seatpost: £free
    Miche on mavic MA2: £3
Stolen from my bridgestone Miche pistard
    Espresso chainset: £17
    KMC chain: £4
    Genetic stem: £15
    System-ex bars: £10

    = £60

This bike is a bit of fun and I'll be swapping and changing parts all the time!

Not 100% sure if it's real, seen quite a few NJS stamps, but who is anyone to say?

  • Bought some months ago before the Bridgestone? If so then I guess this was your first NJS. Pretty nice build for £60. Bars need some ratty white tape to match the saddle.

  • Love the fact that the most expensive thing was the stem! Awesome!

  • Nice Mk2 collection :)

  • Could do with a brake, if only to hide that gape

  • Hopefully going to kill some puppies tomorrow! Light mount and rear brake cable brazings are being cut off.

I really enjoy this bike, locked it outside the pub and not having to worry about it was a real pleasure. Next on the list is to get some lower spec pedals (the current ones are track campag super record - first ever to be mixed with espresso?)

  • This thing is starting to get the "the fuck you looking at?" look to it..

My seatpost was jammed stuck. Usually I would carefully heat it up with a hairdryer, thin oil, wiggle it, leave it to soak etc. But not with this, out the propane came. Within 30 seconds my seatpost was free to move!

Now being project shitter, I wasn't really bothered about the look of it, I just wanted to keep it going, so i got out the 180 grit and then sprayed some cheap lacquer I had laying around, here is the result:

    http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q748/nqbikes123/560B5DF3-40ED-4EB0-BDC7-C326E593D906-102-0000000048C722E7_zpsb11daa1d.jpg

At the same time I noticed the sharpied-up chainring needed a little lacquer, so I sprayed a little "sweet", I sprayed a little more "cooooool" before I knew it, I ended up with this:

    http://i1357.photobucket.com/albums/q748/nqbikes123/76C09E51-8F43-4A28-A1B1-C626E15ABA6D-102-000000004DD0B025_zpsb0c7bfdd.jpg

I have no idea why, but I like it..?

  • Marble chainring

  • That's nuts, I love it.

It's official, I am in love with this bike, here is why.

A chap I work with, we'll call him errrr Mr. M.

Mr. M has over £2000 worth of bike and equipment from Halford's. His tyres are pumped upto the correct pressure for optimum performance which he goes on about all day and how fast he is on the bike.

I'm not a 'quick' rider as such, but I can shift when I need to. Anyway, 6.30pm came, home time. He got changed into his lycra and his filled up his aero bottles for the 5 mile commute home, I unlocked my bike from outside, slung my bag on my back and off I went, taking a casual pace. about 5 minuets later he comes past me panting and sounding like he's going to die shouting "catch up" to me. So, I did. He was going flatout and I breezed past him on my 60 odd quid bike made from parts I found in my workshop. He never did catch me up, it got to the point where I couldn't even see him anymore on London road (a real straight road).

The next day he was giving it the "I was warming up still" "my brakes where rubbing" etc etc.

Second reason I love this bike is that I can lock it anywhere and not worry. I spent a good £50 on lock and cable ensuring no scumbag can steal MY bike. I've theft-proof everything.

Oh, you want to steal my saddle? Good fucking luck.

You really fancy my bar and stem? Cool story bro, have a go at stealing them.

  • I've got a few Mr.M's at work. Too funny.

  • ^ha yes, me too!

james: can I steal your pedal dust caps please?

  • Sorry dude, sold those sexy campag pedals since then! Fairly sure I've got some more tho?

  • I hardly ever lock my bike up (I've never really needed one for a commute until now). How is my locking skills? How are my locks? What could be improved?

  • Tonight I did this... Sanded down the tubes then got bored, so just lacquered it. In real life it does actually look quite cool as there is a mixture of old paint, clean metal and the lovely brazing. Thinking of lining it a bright red.

Tonight I also stripped the whole bike down, cleaned the BB in swafega, along with the wheel axles, headset and chain, then lubed them all up again using Campagnolo grease and some rather nice chain lube. It runs amazing!

If I did invest any money on this, I know i'd just split it for parts later on, so I'm determined to spend as little as possible. Thinking of spraying the rear rim black, then putting a black tyre on the front.

  • Swarfega - Degreaser of the gods.

  • Really nice build for the money. I want to do the same, it's just finding the deals!

  • Update,

the Leicester Forest 10 TTs start early next month, I needed a bike. I was considering building up a classic TT beast with the parts I've got in the garage, but where is the fun in that? I'm doing it on this.

I sold the front DP18 for £25, that is the money I will be spending on this to turn it into a TT bike. I'm 1/2 way through it's completion.

    Pics soon.

  • Well I'm looking forward to seeing that...

  • Made that over the last couple of days. Needs a little more sanding then skinning, should be done early next week. Aero bars are hopefully going on tonight, plus got a few other tricks up my sleeve.

  • Genius

  • Nice project, what's the disc made from?

  • Expanding foam I guess.

  • BOOM

  • That box is really gonna slow you down in TTs
