  • Quite right.

Still a very stupid decision made by the power to prohibited bicycles.

  • Whoops - definitely cycle through that eryday.

  • Filth gotta catch me.. they see me rollin'... etc...

  • ^ this (not everyday however)

  • well watch out because they have targeted it in the past for cyclists. particularly it seems around spring/summer if i recall.

  • When there's 1000 nodders trying to get through and buses backed up to Dalston.

  • I did not know what, where abouts in holborn?

Cycles are only allowed in Bus lanes with explicit permission. There should be a blue board at the beginning of the lane with a pictogram of what's allowed, and if applicable operating times.

Here is the bus only bus lane, note the circular sign with red border and a bike in the middle. Round sign = not allowed.

So instead of letting cyclists go safely down that road, they force them round the Holborn gyratory.
    Good thinking.

  • I go round the Holborn Gyratory every day- it's fine.

  • you no get catched?

  • I go round the Holborn Gyratory every day- it's fine.

Yeah it is fine, but it would be safer to avoid it if you didn't really know what you were doing

  • Safer to learn what you are doing rather than avoid traffic for ~50 metres, surely?

  • What is the reason for no bikes in there though? There must be some sort of logic behind it, given they're ok in every other bus lane?

  • Something to do with the phasing of the lights at Southampton Row? Maybe there are sensors for buses waiting to go West and therefore devote longer phases to the other directions when no bus present. If bikes were allowed up to there then a green phase would be necessary every turn of the lights...

Maybe, don't go that far South very often.

  • Take this with a pinch of salt- I seem to recall that last time this subject came up it was explained by reason of the bus lane being too narrow for a bus to pass a cyclist.

Which never sounded very convincing, I will admit.

  • I have seen poor overtaking the other way round too, I'd love it to be that they were thinking of cyclist safety, but I doubt it's the case.

  • They are everywhere this morning - I saw a couple of m-bikes lurking under Blackfriars Station Bridge this morning and then central is closed to traffic but lots of police

  • Yeah, lots of police today. Wha gwaan?

  • Yeah, lots of police today. Wha gwaan?

    Probably Maggy T's Funeral!

  • Roads in central were lovely and quiet this morning. Coppers waving cyclists through closed off roads around Blackfriars - fantastic.

There are government guidelines about how wide a bus lane should be and how wide it should be if bikes are allowed.

But iirc most local government ignores it.

Maybe because when the buses stop at Bloomsbury Square cyclists end up overtaking into three lanes of oncoming traffic?

But making us go round the gyratory isn't a great deal safer...all needs redesigning.

  • SImplest solution is to make it two way.
